I’m sure dog owners who have a yard full of open holes are wondering how to get a dog to stop digging? Your poor lawn and flowers could definitely use the break. Well, the good news is that it’s really not that difficult of a process.
Negative reinforcement is an absolute no-no when it comes to teaching your dog not to dig. You must remember it is instinctual for a dog to dig.
Remember, abusing your dog will do more harm than good. Hitting has been proven to bring out more negative than positive effects.
Good smells in the ground can be the reason why your dog wants to dig. If your dog doesn’t find the smell of the ground appealing, the dog wouldn’t want to dig. It would make sense if the dog smelled something he really didn’t like, he would stop.
You could find what smells your dog is not fond of, then place those smells around your yard. A great example would be something like mouthwash, which most dogs really don’t like.
A technique as simple as this may be enough to put an end to your problem completely.
You can also prevent your dog’s digging habits in certain holes by placing foul smells such as your dogs poop inside of the hole. That’s a real sneaky way to do it.
Seeing as most dogs dislike fecal matter, it is only natural that they will not want it on their feet, thus putting an end to the digging.
