Though they are not at greater risk to it, Labrador dogs may suffer cough too. Different breeds of dogs, even noticeably healthy Labrador dogs are not totally exempted from acquiring kennel cough. This cough usually started with the sound as if your dog wants to clear his throat.

Kennel cough, also called tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious disease brought by several infectious agents. This illness targets the dog’s upper respiratory system, irritating and damaging the trachea and upper bronchi.

Affected dogs will suffer from harsh, dry/hacking coughing that includes retching, sneezing and snorting. A watery nasal discharge may be experienced. These symptoms usually last approximately seven to twenty days. Kennel cough is just like common chest cold in humans.

Kennel cough is just like cold in human. The spread of it is similar to the way a human cold is transmitted. When an infected dog gives off air, the organisms carrying this disease goes with the expired air. When inhaled by your dog, these organisms cling to the lining of the upper trachea and upper airway passages. The next thing these organisms will do is to look for a warm, moist surface in which to reside and multiply. Enclosed places like kennel, animal shelter and indoor dog shows should be cleaned and disinfected properly in order to help prevent the spread of this disease.

Kennel cough can be treated easily. Even if your dog is suffering from this disease, your dog remains the same except for that troubling dry cough. Majority with dogs suffering from kennel cough still continue to eat, sleep, play and do the things they used to do. Treatment of this disease depends on the status or severity. Taking cough suppressants is usually enough in most cases. However, antibiotics are prescribed in some cases especially if accompanied with fever.

Just like humans, dogs can not choose the air they breathe in. Whether they want it or not, organisms carrying kennel cough can possibly invade their bodies and damage their health. It is just right that your Labrador dogs get the maximum protection needed to prevent this canine illness. Dogs, especially those who will be exposed to the outside world like obedience training and dog shows must be properly vaccinated.
