For dog owners, one of the worst situations imaginable is where you puppy or dog bites an unprepared victim. In most cases this problem is not dealt with well by the owner (if dealt with at all). It does need to be addressed however as it’s a problem that will only get worse as the dog gets older. All dog owners should know how to stop puppies biting (or dogs) - this is a fundamental and required skill.

Dogs are pack animals that have long since used biting and fighting amongst themselves as a form of establishing rankings and showing dominance. Your dog actually believes that you are part of his pack and will want to protect you if he senses a threat. This is the reason dogs sometimes lash out unexpectedly. This is especially noticeable in dogs that lack obedience training.

When you bring a new puppy to your house they will almost always nip and bite you and your family members. This is normal behaviour, especially for puppies that are trying to establish their standing in the house. Allowing your puppy to nip and bite (even though it can be cute) is never a good idea as it lets your puppy believe that he holds dominance over you, that he is in fact the Alpha Dog. This can lead to more serious problems.

When he gets older he will need to reaffirm this dominance by possibly biting or injuring you and members of your family in an attempt to maintain his dominance. You will need to teach him very early on that the leader of the pack is you. You will need to point this out by how you behave and using calm but firm commands that you expect to be followed.

There are some simple tricks used by dog trainers to get your dog to a place where he understands that you are and will always be the leader of the pack. One of them is by the simple act of eating. If you allow your dog to have his food before you, it may mean you are subservient to him. If instead you eat your food and make him wait till you are finished eating, it will set you as the leader of the pack.

You must also be firm with your dog at times so that he can understand you are in charge. From the time your dog is a puppy you should establish this understanding. Dogs who have lived tough lives, such as those thrown in shelters or those abandoned by their owners will be harder to train in this aspect. The will need more time and persistent effort before seeing you as the Alpha Dog.

When training your dog or puppy not to bite, be sure you gain the respect of your dog and that you are seen as the leader of the pack. If you struggle to achieve this status, or you cant quite work out how to stop puppies biting, you may want to seek help from a professional dog trainer or use a quality dog training guide such as the one listed below.
