If puppies could have their way, they’d choose to run free all the time, so you should expect some initial resistance to the dog crate. Puppies have to learn to accept periods of confinement. They won’t like it right away but acceptance will come.

Most puppies will whine or bark during the first few days of being put in their crate. Once they begin to accept this new restriction on their freedom, they quiet down and actually learn to enjoy it. Growing puppies need to alternate between periods of activity and rest throughout the day.

Toy puppies will not be able to chew their way through a whole lot of surfaces, but they can chew at irreplaceable furniture and moldings enough to do quite a bit of damage. Be sure to puppy-proof your home before the curious, mischievous and teething toy puppy arrives.

When you return, let the puppy out of the crate and take it outside immediately. Be sure to give it lavish praise when it eliminates. If you are consistent in your training, your puppy will learn and expect to go to the bathroom outside, and the crate will reinforce this.

Puppies, naturally, love biting. Learning to stop your puppy from biting is not the hardest thing to do in the world. Most of puppies can be easily trained to stop biting. However, there are several basic rules that you should keep in mind before start training them.

Remember that while puppies are very energetic, you don’t need to puppy proof the whole house, just the rooms that he or she will be in unsupervised. Crate training is a great way to minimize the amount of puppy proofing that needs to occur to keep your new arrival safe and healthy.

If you let your puppy out of the dog crate while he’s upset, you’ll be rewarding him for barking. The next time he’s supposed to go in his crate, he will bark again because that’s what got him out the last time. Be patient and the whining will stop.

The journey is exciting and can be very satisfying for both you and your dog, keeping in mind the puppy developmental stages, enjoy your puppy while he is a puppy, because as with children, the time passes way too fast and then they are grown up!
