Modern America is now epitomized by a growing number of pet owners who see pets as family and friends rather than merely animals that have to be fed. Previously, pet ownership was delegated to families especially since at least one member, mostly the mothers, were at home to extend care to their pets. Today, however, even working singles and couples are taking on the responsibility of caring for pets.

Based on the 2005-2006 National Pet Owner Survey of the America Pet Products Association, pet ownership is now 63% of the country’s total households. Most of these households prefer dogs, birds and cats for pets. This is mainly due to their loving personalities as well as their faithfulness to their owners, traits that pet owners are endeared to. In return for such love, owners also lavish their pets with attention and affection.

Realistically, owners cannot always provide such love and care especially since their daily routine goes beyond home and work. Oftentimes, they face the dilemma of not knowing where or to whom they could safely entrust their pets when they have to be away for a long period of time either for vacation, an emergency trip or out-of-town engagements. For some owners, a day away from their pets is already agonizing, while for others, being away for more than a day is a big problem.

Historically, owners who often faced such quandary usually had two options: appealing to neighbors to at least regularly feed their pets or letting them board in a kennel or a family member’s place. For the most part, both options have caused stress and shock to owners (for the uncertain quality of care that their pets will get) and their pets (who have to deal with new people, playmates and surroundings).

The good news for pet owners is that there is a better option to those previously mentioned. Pet sitting is a relatively new service in America which provides personalized care to pets while their owners are away. Pet sitting addresses two of the immediate problems often encountered by pet owners: unfamiliar care-givers and environment.

Pet sitting ensures that an assigned pet sitter equally provides the same love and care that pets are used to getting from their owners. A pet sitter that gets assigned to an owner becomes the regular sitter at all times. This process ensures that pets are accustomed to the same person, which reduces their stress every time their owners are away. Pet sitters see to it that all routines and quirks shared by owners and their pets are carried out, including eating, fun and exercise activities. Pet sitters also see to it that all tasks outside the routine are performed (e.g. medication and vet check-up).

Finally, pet sitting guarantees that only professional pet sitters provide this service. Hence, they are able to ascertain a pet’s needs which owners sometimes fail to notice (e.g. vet schedules, new and effective shots). Beyond these, sitters also make sure that an owner’s house is safe.
