Recently we have read of many manufacturers recalling their dog food for safety reasons. This has made many wonder if they are feeding their animals safe dog food. And well it should, because safe dog food is not easy to find at your grocery store. Commercially made dog food companies don’t make their labels easy to read. In fact they are confusing and difficult to comprehend. That’s because the food processors, the grocery industry and the pet food manufacturers have made every effort to fight the FDA to keep the labels from being easily understood.
That is not surprising. Have you read the ingredients in your dog’s dinner lately? Many of the cans are bags will include a healthy sounding ingredient known as meat meal. That almost sounds good enough for humans. Meat meal. But what is it?
Meat meal generally comes from rendering plants. That is to say, it is made up of a slow stew of dead carcasses of animals from varying sources. These include animals euthanized at animal centers and in zoos. It also includes putrid road kill that is picked up by state and county road crews. Often times these animals are still wearing flea collars, have I.D. Tags, and are even wrapped in plastic bags which are all put into the rendering vat to be turned into meat meal. Does that sound like safe dog food?
No wonder so many public outcries have been heard over the dangers of commercial dog food. Residues of the very lethal chemicals used to euthanize the animals are ever present in the final product. Cats and dogs that diet on this food have been diagnosed with cancers that cut their lives in half. Their kidneys, livers, immune systems –all vital organs — are at risk. Tumors are frequently diagnosed in dogs (perhaps you have had that sad diagnosis for one of your pets?) and veterinarians point to the cause as commercial dog food. Not exactly safe dog food.
There must be a solution to this terrible health risk to our pets. And there is. Dog food that is made at home with natural ingredients is safe dog food. Perhaps the idea of making your own dog food is daunting. But it isn’t really. Making natural homemade dog food is a fairly simple, inexpensive task.
Many prepare their dog’s dinners once a week and freeze them. They don’t use expensive ingredients. Hundreds of recipes are available in books and on line. It is no wonder that more pet lovers are choosing this safe dog food alternative, providing their pet with natural homemade dog food.
Tonight, when your little four legged companion comes to you with her food bowl asking for dinner, think about what you are feeding her. She depends on your choices for her health and her longevity. Why not feed her natural homemade dog food — safe dog food?
