Gallon aquarium tanks are wonderful for taking up the hobby of keeping fish and other kinds of marine life. But they need to be maintained properly in order for the aquatic life in them to thrive. Yet you can’t start this hobby straight away after getting your gallon aquarium tank; you need to spend some time setting it up.

The first thing you will find when you go online or visit your local pet or aquarium supply store, is that there are many different types of gallon aquarium tanks for you to select from. As well as coming in a number of different shapes and sizes, they also come in different materials; no longer are these being made just from glass.

Gallon Aquarium Tank - What Framework Do They Have?

If the gallon aquarium tank you purchase is constructed from glass, then the framework surrounding it will be made from either angle iron or stainless steel. These metals will have been welded at each corner where the frame joins together, and then the glass will then slot inside it.

Between the metal framework and the glass, either a putty aquarium cement, silicon or acrylic sealant, will be placed to ensure that it doesn’t leak. Also to ensure that you don’t cause any untoward stress on the framework of your gallon aquarium tank, it must be placed on a level surface; if not, then the chances of the glass in it cracking are greatly increased.

Although the framework of a gallon aquarium tank is most often made using metal, sometimes they can be made from wood, particularly plywood as it is less likely to warp after coming into contact with water. Again to prevent water escaping from the tank through the frame joints, an epoxy sealant is applied between the frame and the glass. One benefit of having a wooden, rather than metal frame, is that you can actually decorate it (paint, varnish or cover in material) to match a room’s decor.

Other Materials Used For Constructing A Gallon Aquarium Tank

Traditionally for many years aquariums were only ever made from glass, however other materials such as acrylic are becoming popular for building gallon aquarium tanks. These types of tanks generally cost more to buy than glass ones, but they weigh less and you can get them in a much larger choice of shapes.

Yes acrylic gallon aquarium tanks do weigh less than the glass ones, so they are not as prone to cracking, but they do become scratched more easily. If you don’t take good care of your acrylic tank, then the sides can become marred, and being able to view the inhabitants within, becomes more difficult and you may find yourself having to replace the tank completely in the future.

Another material which is often used in the construction of gallon aquarium tanks is Vitrolite, that is similar to glass, but comes in some very strange and wonderful colors. Often this material will be added to a tank afterward, to the sides and back, and because it is opaque, it is used as a way to hide all those unsightly wires and equipment.

Spend some time before you go out and buy your gallon aquarium tank doing some research into the various different types that are available. Along with reading some reviews going online you can actually quickly compare the prices of those that you are considering and hopefully you will be able to make a more informed decision as to which gallon aquarium tank is suitable for you to start up your hobby with.
