if we don’t protect our pets they may become statistics. Not something we would want when we could avoid the problem by using today’s technology. The Microchip RFID Tag is a simple and useful tool in stopping uneccesary euthanasia.

Microchip RFID technology is widespread throughout the world and allows pets to be scanned and their owners identified through their registration in pet recovery databases. The chip, the size of a grain of rice, is implanted under the skin near the shoulder blades of the animal. This can be done at the same time your veterinarian is doing the animals vaccinations and or booster shots. The chip is a small radio transponder which is excited by the scanner and allows the chip number to be read.

According to a 1997 study of 1000 animal shelters across America, conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, approximately one million dogs and 584,000 cats were taken in as strays. Unfortunately for the both the owners and animals only 16% of those dogs and 2% of the cats were returned to the owners. It is alarming that thousand of pets are euthanized because their owners cannot be found. We have the power to stop this.

An open door, or unlocked fence can be the difference between a lost pet and a dead pet. With the technology available pets can be recovered in greater numbers than through the use of tags, collars with the owners name and pets name inscribed. These can come off or be chewed off with wear. the microchip is invisible yet powerful. Microchips and their database registrations have also been helpful in natural disasters such as storms, hurricanes in returning lost pets to their owners.

A number of cities and towns require a microchip and registration as part of their licensing process, for identification and the funding of animal control services. The cost of microchip registration in the various databases is minimal compared to the anguish of a child whose favorite pet has gone missing. Adopted animals are often microchipped by animal welfare organizations while individuals can have the microchip implanted by their veterinarian for under $50.00. A small price to pay for pece of mind.

The odds of recovery of a lost pet is enhanced by the microchip compared to other methods. We will still see posters on telephone poles ad bulletin boards when a pet is lost. The owner can avoid further anguish by ensuring the pet has been chipped and registered. The sight of a crying child whose favorite dog or cat has gone missing should remind us as adults of our responsibility as a pet parent

The information contained in the registration allows the rapid contact and return of the animal upon arriving at animal welfare organization. Shelters across North America have scanners that can read and identify a wide variety of chips being used. In the United States there is a movement to international microchip standards (ISO) which are used in most developed countries including Canada. The current non-ISO chips in the US can be read today and in Canada the scanners read both ISO and non-ISO chips in scanners provided specifically for that market.

When an animal arrives at a shelter or is taken to a veterinarian it can be readily scanned and its microchip naumber read. Each brand of microchip, such as 24Petwatch,Avid or Home Again, has specific identifiers that indicate the manufacturer. All have call-centers which have toll-free numbers. The 24Petwatch registry allows for the regisrtation of all microchips regardless of maker. Their database is also integrated with the largest online realtime shelter management software in North America, which allows the shelter to search their database as well as those of some 850 other agencies. This combined with accurate updating by owners of address changes allows you to find your lost pet quickly.
