Finding a dog bed of any sort is difficult, but it can be especially hard selecting one for your outdoor dog. There are a number of different dog bed outdoor styles to take into consideration, plus several other things you need to think about before purchasing an outdoor bed for your dog or puppy.

Some people might hesitate to buy any dog bed outdoor model at all. It’s just going to get dirty or torn up, they might argue. However, your dog will greatly enjoy having an outdoor area where he or she can lie down and rest. This is especially true if you leave your dog outside a lot.

Of course, it all depends on what your dog’s bed is made out of. Outdoor dog bed material is very important. Some might think they can get away with putting an indoor dog bed outside by putting it somewhere that’s covered. However, beds made for indoors simply aren’t going to withstand rain, snow, ice, and everything else an outdoor bed is going to be exposed to

If you’re looking into the supplies the bed is constructed from, you’ll need to make sure it’s waterproof. Even if the mat is left in a protected area, your dog will still bring water onto it if they get caught in a storm. It’s also good to select waterproof fabric for easy cleaning as these can be quickly cleaned with a water hose if they get dirty.

While a covered area like a porch or deck is a great place to put your bed, that might not be an option for you. If it’s not, you’ll still need to consider where to put your dog bed outdoor mattress. Perhaps under a tree or in a shady corner of the yard is the best spot. No matter where you put it, always think about keeping it dry so your dog will want to use it.

Keeping the bed dry is one thing; keeping your dog warm in its dog bed is another. However, there are some dog bed outdoor models that are aimed at just this. These may be made out of material that is designed to absorb and hold heat, or it may require you to stuff with cloth or sawdust. Either way, you want your dog to be warm in its outdoor sleeping place.

One way to avoid the heating issue is to send a little extra money and get a self-heating dog bed outdoor model. While generally only used in really cold areas, they’re available for purchase from most pet stores. These beds have a built-in heating pad that needs to be plugged into an outdoor outlet. Just be sure that you follow all the instructions and don’t put your heated bed anywhere that could start a fire.

The downside to these heated beds is that they can cause your dog to actually get too hot. This means you’ll have to keep an eye on the weather and turn off your heated dog bed when it’s hot outside. Don’t set the bed’s thermostat too high except during the colder months. Watch and see when your dog is in the bed a lot-that’s when you’ve found that perfect temperature he likes.

Select a sturdy bed for your dog - you want to be sure it’s strong enough to withstand the elements and the wear and tear your dog will give it. Also, realize that your dog bed outdoor cushion may be the target for other animals, too. Be ready with some odor remover if a stray cat or other animal decides to mark it as their territory.

Once you’ve got your bed selected, it’s time to find the right place for it. Remember, keep it dry and in a shady spot. Also, make sure your dog can get to it without any difficulty. One way of deciding where to put the bed is to see where your dog already sleeps. Making his favorite napping place more comfortable is one way of insuring your dog will love his new outdoor bed.
