Chihuahua Training
Posted by John Savage at Feb 22nd, 2009 in Dogs
I have heard it said that a Chihuahua is a very difficult dog to train, and this puts a lot of people off of them. But this just is not true. They are great dogs for doing tricks with, they are intelligent, and most importantly, they are highly trainable.
Consistency and treats are the keys to successful training. Like most other animals, Chihuahuas respond to positive results. If they do something and get a positive result, such as praise and a treat, they are likely to repeat the action in an attempt to get the same positive result.
Its positive training that really works. Reward them when they get it right, but do not punish them when they get it wrong just resolve to keep on working at it until it comes right.
When you ask them to do something, and they do it, go overboard with your praise, and your treats, and they will probably do the same again next time. If they don’t just withold the treat until you get the desired action.
And another thing to think about is how you plan to give your commands. Will it be by voice, hand signals, or Clicker? Unless you are going to show your dog, I would suggest using verbal commands.
As regards timing, aim for two or three short training sessions a day lasting no more that fifteen minutes, and try and do this every day, not just when you think of it.
Finally, realize that you can train your Chihuahua to follow any command that it is physically capable of following. Start with simple behavioral commands, such as sit, stay, and come, and work your way up to the more complicated commands and tricks, giving the dog the opportunity to master one trick or command before moving on to another one.
And this one step at a time approach will pay off big time. Your dog is highly intelligent, and keen to please, so please show them kindness and patience, and your training time will be well rewarded.
