If my mother’s yorkie dog cracks a bone he instantly drops it out on the plate and very carefully picks the food away from it. In the same way, my friend can give her dog a big piece of bone and tell him to eat it as long as it doesn’t splinter.

When my friend wants to train his dog he uses bones, because his dog loves bones. If my friend’s dog’s bone cracks she drops it and won’t touch it again, until she has it examined for safety. If your dog doesn’t examine bones for safety I recommend checking them yourself, as an oversight can be deathly to your dog.

Guarding Training Train your Yorkshire terrier to guard your property. In fact, it is natural for any dog to guard its owner’s property.

Gently open the dog’s mouth by inserting your finger into the side of the mouth where there are no teeth, immediately behind the large canine tooth. Always keep your hand on top of the dog’s nose, not trying to pull down the bottom jaw.

Larger dogs can be trained for retrieving an object with a dumb-bell, but a yorkie could be trained with just about any other light weight object. When the dog drops the object, rush to pick the object up and do so joyfully, in an excited manner.

If you shove it roughly into the mouth you will frighten and hurt the dog. Should the dog try to spit it out as many may put it firmly back with the command and ‘hold’ while making sure that you pose no threat to the dog’s safety or well-being.

Dogs’ nerves can be soothed merely by communicating to your dog what is to be expected. Look into your yorkie’s eyes and tell them in a soothing voice that they have done well if they have pleased you.

If your yorkie displeases you during training, try to refrain from showing frustration. Continue the command until the yorkie completes the behavior correctly, then reward the behavior.
