Warning signs of a sick cat

by Cheryl L. True

Like people, cats get sick too. Here are common diseases that may affect your feline friend:

Diarrhea - usually caused by an inappropriate diet (e.g. milk and other dairy products despite the myth that cats enjoy milk) although it can also be the result of bacterial infection, viruses and other parasites. In most cases, a 24-hour fast will return things to normal. If not, consult your vet.

Vomiting - an occasional bout of vomiting is normal as curious felines often ingest things they shouldn’t. However, if vomiting is frequent, it may be a sign of hairballs, parasites or other serious problems. If vomiting is accompanied by other symptoms like diarrhea, listlessness or blood in the vomit, see your vet immediately.

Sneezing - this is usually a sign of “cat flu” or “snuffles”, a disease of the upper respiratory tract. There is little you can do in terms of medication as the disease is viral and the cat’s own immune system will combat it. This may take up to two weeks for complete recovery.

The problem with stray dogs

by Cheryl L. True

Stray dogs are a problem in every community. Surprisingly, some pet owners even let their dogs out at night to roam free which can be a problem to other people.

The number of accidents your pet can figure in is limitless. Dogs can be hit by cars, get lost or become involved in a dogfight. So it’s a good idea to keep your dog inside at night.

If you don’t have a fence to keep your dog in, look at alternative ways of containing your dog on your property. You can use a running line or an invisible electric fence.

Kenneling the dog is another cheap alternative. Just make sure your dog gets enough exercise and shelter.

Aside from getting in trouble with other dogs, stray dogs can kill other animals like sheep and livestock. They also add to the growing population of dogs.

Nobody likes to have other dogs urinating or defecating on their lawn so keeping your dog on your property is good for the whole community.

Diabetic dog food anyone?

by Cheryl L. True

Many people would laugh at the thought of buying diabetic dog food for a pet that isn’t inflicted with the disease. To them, it would be a waste of time and money. Why buy diabetic dog food when you can go for brands that are not only cheaper but more plentiful?

Well, as “hilarious” as the thought may seem, foods made for diabetic dogs actually have nutritional elements that can be helpful for all types of dogs even if they don’t have the condition. How come? First, there’s the issue of protein content.

Since diabetic dogs can’t process glucose very well, it’s important that their foods contain high-quality protein. Traditional dog foods don’t always follow suit. If protein is present, it’s often from sources that are not good for canine nutrition.

These specialized foods also contain a suitable amount of fiber. Yet with traditional dog food brands, there is either too much or too little fiber. Pet owners can never expect anything that’s just right, unless they are prepared to extensively research dog food comparison charts.

Full of spunk and dauntlessly courageous; these and more are what makes the West Highland White Terrier an absolute charmer and enthusiastic little gamer. This dog is widely recognized for having a short, brilliant white hair, compact little body and fearless spirit. Tagged as well as “Westie”, this little diminutive charmer has a wide base of admirers and the number continue to rise by the day.

With all the recognition and pampering that the Westie receives today, it is surprising to know that they are once un-favored by many in Scotland for the reason that they are a meaningless and untidy little dogs of the poor peasants and workers. The injustice reaches to the point of abandonment, famish, and even killing of these innocent and lovable little terriers.

Things to consider in a pet containment system

by Cheryl L. True

Are electric dog fences expensive? Many people who ask this question are surprised to discover that this type of fence is no more expensive than traditional fences. In fact, in the long run, electric pet containment systems can actually save you money, both in vet bills and in labor.

Also, unlike wire fences which can be cut or privacy fences that can have holes kicked in them or become the backdrop for local graffiti art, an electric dog fence requires very little maintenance.

The main concern that pet owners need to worry about with this confinement system is whether or not the batteries are running low in their pets’ collars. But the guess work has been eliminated since quality systems now provide collars that feature a low battery indicator light, making it even easier to keep your electric dog fence in tip top shape.
