The Brazilian Mastiff is a bloodhound/mix. A very interesting combination indeed; These are mastiffs who also have some of the traits of the bloodhound. This includes the legendary noses of that breed. They also possess the gentleness of the mastiff. Originating in Brazil, these dogs are also known as Fila Brasiliero in Portuguese. Once used as guards for Brazilian plantations, they were brought to what is now the U.S. by conquistadors.
These gentle giants can easily weigh over 100 pounds, and stand up to 30″ tall. Having the flabby neck and long face of bloodhounds, their fur varies in color from reddish to black, even yellow. Brindled specimens are the most popular however.
As most of their cousins in the Mastiff family, the Brazilian Mastiff is very loving in nature. They can be aggressive as well. They are gentle with children and very protective of them. Mastiffs are very obedient to their masters and very easy to train as well. The have great pride and courage.

The Mastiff dog is a dog fan favorite and has proven to be very interesting. Pronouned (Matin de Espanol) in Spanish countries this article will be written about the Spanish Mastiff. This breed is currently in the process of being recognized by the Foundation Stud Service and has an active parent club in the unites states.
The Foundation Stud Service hs strict requirements for accepting a breeed. It’s unfortunate but at this time the Spanish Mastiff doesn’t qualify for membership. We are sure this very popular mastiff breed will soon qualify and become even more popular.
Mastiff Dog Origins
This dog is part of the mastiff breed and originally from Spain. In fact in some parts of Spain this dog is used as a guard dog for sheep and cattle. Noted for having an even temper the Spanish Mastiff is gentle mannered with children. This dog is prone to aggression with other dogs and will not tolerate strangers. The mastiff dog is usually kept in the outdoors. If the situation arises where the dog needs to be kept inside then it should have access to a large fenced in yard and of course daily walks.

Yep, there’s no doubt about it, you’re hooked. You think that the Mastiff is just the greatest dog that ever lived (and quite frankly, we’re not about to argue with you!). So now your quest to find a purebred Mastiff puppy to call your own begins.
But the question is: Just where to you start?
Follow your first inclination and start with a local search. Try the paper and phone book. Whatever you do, don’t get a puppy based on the convenience of finding a local breeder. What’s a little distance compared to the joy of finding your perfect puppy.
By all means, check the paper. Then visit some dog shows. Show dog owners may be breeders or may know of some quality breeders. Show dog owners will be happy to guide you in your quest for your Mastiff pup.
