10 gallon aquariums need as much setting up as you would have to do if you owned a much large size aquarium. Certainly if you want to see the fish and marine life you put into a 10 gallon aquarium to thrive then creating their ideal environment is essential.

As with any size aquarium including a 10 gallon one you are able to keep either freshwater or saltwater tropical fish in them. When it comes to setting up a 10 gallon aquarium or a much larger one the principles remain the same. Below we explain just what one is required to do when setting up a freshwater 10 gallon aquarium.

10 Gallon Aquarium - Things To Do Prior To The Set Up Process

As soon as you get your 10 gallon aquarium home then you need to wash it out completely. Into a bucket place some warm water with a mild detergent and then scrub the tank inside and out. Although the 10 gallon aquarium may look clean it will still have various airborne contaminants, dust and debris on it.

When you have washed the 10 gallon aquarium with the detergent mixture now get on with rinsing it out. You need to wash it out with fresh clean water several times to ensure that not just debris but any detergent residue is removed.

Along with cleaning the 10 gallon aquarium you need to wash any piece of equipment that is going to be situated in the tank also. Remember to rinse them all thoroughly several times in order to ensure that detergent residue and debris is removed from them. If you don’t you could actually cause health problems for the fish and marine life you place in the aquarium and could lead to some dying.

When it comes to cleaning the aquarium gravel before you place it in the tank make sure that is has been washed through well. Do this by placing in a colander and then put this under a running tap and allow to stay there for some time. If you are intending to put plants (real or plastic) into a 10 gallon aquarium then keep them in a bucket which contains clean freshwater until the stage when you are ready to put them in place.

10 Gallon Aquarium - Other Things That Need Doing When Setting One Up

The other thing one needs to do before you actually move on to the stage of setting up your 10 gallon aquarium for real is to test that it doesn’t leak. Do this by filling with water and allow to stand for several hours whilst you monitor it. If everything is okay then you can start on the first stages of preparing your aquarium before you introduce the aquatic life to it.

Remove the water you have used for testing to see if the 10 gallon aquarium is leaking or not. After it has been removed place in the tank the filtration system, which will be either placed on the side of the tank or under the gravel. After the filtration system is in place add the gravel and then the water which must have no chlorine in it. If you are not sure about this then add some chlorine remover to it first and make sure that you follow the dosage instructions that have been provided with the supplies as stated by the manufacturer of this product.

A great way of avoiding disturbing the gravel in your 10 gallon aquarium when filling it for the first time is to place a dish on the gravels surface. Then you very slowly and gently pour the water on the dish and let it flow over the sides on to the gravel and into the tank. What you mustn’t forget to do after filling the 10 gallon aquarium with water is to remove the dish.
